SaaS vs. Licensed Applications

Posted By: Rick Chapman on 1/5/2010

I'm currently writing a new article for Softletter on the impact of SaaS on traditional client/server practices.  I asked Amy Konary, research director of Software Pricing, Licensing and Delivery at IDC to give me a comparative breakdown of the growth of SaaS subscriptions vs new software licenses. I think the number below speaks for itself:

  • In terms of relative growth of SaaS versus licenses, the YoY growth rate from 08-09 for SaaS is 42%, while license is -3% during the same time period. This is a forecast as we don't have the Q4 2009 data from public companies yet.

I'll be following up on this data later this year as the 2009 public 10Ks come online at Edgar.
